Realtors: What we love….What we hate

A National Association of Realtors report confirms we're all in agreement: We want to work with smart, honest real estate agents

A 2006 National Association of Realtors (NAR) Profile of Home Buyers and Home Sellers reports that most consumers are very happy with their real estate professional.  Most respondents to the study identified honesty and knowledge of the purchase process to be the most important factors when choosing an agent.  Read below for a synopsis of what we all expect from our real estate professional.

What we love:

When an agent…

- Has excellent knowledge of the purchase process.  This was rated as one of the two most important factors when choosing an agent.  Buyers and sellers want and need a lot of guidance with this process.

- Has extensive local area knowledge.  Consumers want an agent whose knowledge goes beyond the house.  An agent should know the neighborhood and the town very well.

- Conducts business with honesty and Integrity.  These basic human traits were rated as critical to working with a real estate professional.

- Demonstrates effective communication skills.  Consumers want constant feedback.  Poor communication is cited as one of the biggest reasons a buyer or seller goes shopping for a new agent.

- Is very responsive to their needs.  Buyers and sellers want to feel that they are the most important priority in their agent’s day.

What we hate:

When an agent…

- Makes us feel unimportant.  For example when a buyer or seller feel the agent is giving a more expensive property priority over their less expensive property.

- Fails to provide adequate guidance on pricing issues.  Buyers and sellers want their agent to stay educated about the market and to advise them based on concrete market data.

- Has trouble getting along with others.  Buyers and sellers want to feel confident that an agent is negotiating respectfully with other agents.  Poor negotiating skills can put a deal in jeopardy.

It comes as no surprise that we are all in agreement – Intelligence, honesty, integrity – are our top priority when choosing a real estate professional.
