Bill Littlefield, host of NPR's 'Only A Game', will talk about the place of sports in our students' lives

Bill Littlefield, host of NPR’s Only A Game, and Needham father of two, will talk about the place of sports in our students’ lives. Popular sports culture may rule life in your house, or may leave you wondering what the big deal is with sports at all. What do we hope our kids will take from the playing field to the classroom and life beyond? What can sports teach us about ourselves?

The hour-long program is the lead in to the Weekend Edition Saturday.  Produced by WBUR in Boston, Only a Game is all sports, all the time.  Appropriate for the serious sports fan as well as soccer Moms.

Please join the discussion on Valentine’s Day, Thursday, February 14, 8am in the Weston High School Media Center.  If you want more information about Bill Littlefield, click on www.onlyagame.org.

The Weston Education Enrichment Fund (WEEFC) Fall Gala

September 24th, 2007 Maureen McCaffrey Posted in Weston, Weston Community Events No Comments »

The WEEFC Annual Fall Gala is Saturday, November 3 at the Westin Hotel in Waltham

The Weston Education Enrichment Fund (WEEFC) Fall Gala is November 3rd at the Westin Hotel in Waltam.  Get involved, have some fun and help plan the event, which will make such a huge difference in your child’s education in the Weston schools.  This week’s meeting of the WEEFC Fall Gala/Auction volunteers is Friday, September 20, at 9:30 am at 55 Chestnut Street in Weston.

The Weston Education Enrichment Fund Committee (WEEFC) was formed in 1985 to solicit tax-deductible donations to support creative and innovative projects beyond the scope of the regular school budget.  The committee is comprised of nine parent volunteers and an elected member of the school committee, each serving two-year renewable terms.  Money is raised by contributions to an annual fund drive.  There are also a number of different social events and a fall gift wrap drive every year that are run by parent volunteers.  All donations are used immediately.  WEEFC was established as an annual fund, in the belief that parents would prefer to support a fund that would provide immediate benefits to their children.  Separate endowment funds do exist.  The first fundraising event of the 2007-2008 school year is the November Gala.

Our children benefit greatly from the generous support of our schools by Weston parents.  Please help to make this Gala a success!

CONCERTS ON THE WESTON TOWN GREEN

June 22nd, 2007 Ann Burford Posted in Weston, Weston Community Events No Comments »

Free weekly concerts in Weston Center, Massachusetts

Is there anything more quintessentially New England than a summer evening spent listening to a free concert, seated on a blanket or  lawn chair, enjoying picnic fare, while children and dogs cavort on an expansive town green with a magnificent Colonial Town Hall as the back drop?  The chaos of the Weston family fun is controlled by the concert goers’ good spirits and good manners.  Dogs are bid to behave and children are expected to be respectful of others as they play with beach balls, wiffle balls, kites, or chase each other in ever widening circles.  An ice cream truck offers timeless frozen and liquid treats.  Adults stand in groups watching over their charges, chatting with new friends or catching up with old pals.  Many of the children feel inspired by the music to dance to their own rhythms.  To grown up observers there may or may not appear to be any synergy between the kids’ gyrations and the beat emanating from the stage.

The Weston Town Green free concerts are Wednesday evenings at 7 PM.  They are sponsored by Cambridge Trust Company and Omni Foods. Sorry, but there are no rain dates.

June 27 - Boston City Band will present a variety of music: marches, musical scores, jazz, pop and swing.

July 11 - The Tom Nutile Band offers the sounds of the “big band” era.

July 18 - The Glamour Girls -  Amid costume changes and choreography, the ladies present pop/rock of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, Motown, disco and soul.

July 25 - Westwood Swing Band - jive, swing and the ”big band” sound.

August 1 - The John Penny Band - An eclectic mix of marches, musicals, jazz, pop, and swing.

August 8 - Reminisants - Everyone’s favortie oldies band.

So come join the fun and experience one of Weston’s favorite summertime family activities.
