Wellesley MA High School’s Seminar Day a Smashing Success

Seminars range from Black Hawk Down Helicopters to NPR's "It's Only a Game"

Every spring WHS students are privileged to participate in Seminar Day which features 80+ speakers on a myriad of subjects not typically presented in a traditional school curriculum.  Special guests are invited to speak by the Wellesley High School PTSO and the event is organized by Student Congress leaders.  http://www.wellesley.mec.edu/whs/pages/ptso/index.html.

This year’s seminars included topics ranging from “Homicide Investigations”, presented by Wellesley Police Chief Terrence Cunningham to “Volunteering Abroad” with Dr. Richard Erhlichman from Healing the Children.  Students have the opportunity to attend three seminars. One highlight was an introduction to aviation in the Army and the Massachusetts National Guard with a UH-60A Blackhawk helicopter static display.  Students investigated the aircraft which was flown in for the occasion and spoke with pilots and crew members.

Teachers get into the act with fun topics of their own.  Teacher Ralph Bowman led his annual “Nature Walk.” Coach/Teacher Andrew Kelton got down to basics with “Tie-Tying with Mr. Kelton.”  ”Hip Hop for the Unhip” was a hit and led by Boston choreographer Shaumba-Yandje Dibingal. Representative Alice Peisch shared her experiences working at the Massachusetts State House and outlined the process of turning bills into law.

Each year students look forward to this opportunity to learn about nontraditional classroom topics and have the opportunity to explore potential careeres and topics of personal interest.
