Moving to Wellesley, MA or Weston, MA.
Searching for a good school system and the right home in Wellesley or Weston.
Weston Or Wellesley
Our Home Search Criteria: Fourteen years ago my husband and I started shopping for a suburb in which to grow our family. We narrowed our search to Weston or Wellesley because of the great school systems. A friend advised us: If you want a neighborhood, look in Wellesley, if you want land, look in Weston. We decided on our search criteria: We wanted a neighborhood setting on a quiet street with a backyard big enough for the kids to play. Sound familiar?
Weston: We began our search in Weston. My first thought as we drove around town was “what a wonderful retirement community”. Each turn led us down another long country road, with only one elementary school in sight. Where were the parks and ball fields and swing sets? We dismissed Weston almost as fast as it took us to drive through the center of town. But why? The backyards were spacious. The streets we chose were quiet and mostly in a neighborhood. All my criteria were met. Or were they?
Wellesley: During our first drive around Wellesley we came upon at least three elementary schools. We saw swing sets, parks and ball fields, but most important we saw a lot of children. We finally bought on a quiet street in a beautiful neighborhood, but the lot had no backyard. We bought it, even though it met only three of our stated criteria. The unstated criteria, and most important, was that our home had to be located in a family oriented community. Wellesley, for good reason, fit the bill.
Back to Weston: At the urging of our friends, we gave Weston a second chance for our search of a larger home. We bought a home in a beautiful close knit neighborhood with lots of land on a quiet street. A neighborhood with an annual block party and swing sets tucked out of sight in spacious backyards. Weston elementary schools are small and in a central location. A school system where all the children in each grade know each other from the day they enter kindergarten and then move on to a small high school housing only 600 or so students. There are many ball fields tucked away in neighborhoods hidden from the main roads. Weston is a town dedicated to preserving open space, a place where education trumps everything, a family oriented community.
Weston or Wellesley: Everyone I know in Wellesley is very happy with the amount of land they own, and everyone I know in Weston feel they live in a neighborhood. Weston has more land, Wellesley has a bigger town center. That’s about as far as the differences go for me. Weston and Wellesley are both very welcoming, family oriented communities with great neighborhoods and schools. I feel very fortunate to have experienced life in both towns.
